Hook
My ears were ringing. All I could hear was the rush of blood vibrating through them, I gripped the staircase, feeling as though I could no longer stand upright without the support.
Aphrodite took a step toward me, her eyes so blue and so wide and all I could think of was the sea. A sea Iâd never seen in this life, but one I knew intimately, with every fiber of my body.
âYouâve known for a very long time that you donât belong in this world. But humans are so adept at denying the magick that exists around them that theyâve infected your mind too.â
I was shaking my head, but in my heart something about what she was saying was ringing with truth.
She nodded. âYes, Hook, your life is in your head. Trapped in there, and has been for many decades. Iâm sorry it took my friends and I so long to find you. Itâs a travesty that you wound up in this cold, sterile world. But weâre here now, itâs okay to remember. Itâs okay to believe again. You know you want to.â
I swallowed hard. My hands were visibly shaking now. Memories began to spiral through me, long forgotten ones that Iâd repressed after the countless beatings Iâd received from my sperm donor. Iâd never felt connected to that man, or the woman whoâd called me her son. Iâd never felt like either of them truly belonged to me. I might have come from her womb and his seed but theyâd not actually been mine or me theirs.
Lost in those memories I heard myself speak, but the sound was small, faraway.
âOnce I saw myself fighting a sea monster, blade in hand, rains whipping at my face. Men stood behind me with their swords drawn. Iâd been powerful, a king of the seas. And beside me, Iâd seen a woman with a shimmering mane of golden blond hair. Sheâd been mine and Iâd been hers. Iâve seen her all my life. But not just her. I saw a female with green hair and a mint colored tail whoâd also been mine. So many times, I tried to tell my family of her, tell them that I needed to find her.â I blinked, snapped back to the present as the haunting echoes of flesh striking flesh rang in my ears. âBut my folks beat that nonsense out of me, I was wrong. That life had never been real.â
Aphrodite was shaking her head. âNo, you were right. And those bastards deserve to have their hands broken for laying a hand upon a child that way. Itâs the curse, Hook, donât you see.â
I laughed. âHook. Pirate. I see why he called me that.â I held up my hands. Perfectly whole and fleshy hands. âThereâs just one problem. I couldnât possibly be this fairy tale character. I have two hands.â
She sniffed. âThe curse has affected us all differently.â
âCurse. Curse. Curse!â I snarled. âThere was no damn curse and Iâm not falling for this. Iâm not crazy.
