Hook

My ears were ringing. All I could hear was the rush of blood vibrating through them, I gripped the staircase, feeling as though I could no longer stand upright without the support.

Aphrodite took a step toward me, her eyes so blue and so wide and all I could think of was the sea. A sea I’d never seen in this life, but one I knew intimately, with every fiber of my body.

“You’ve known for a very long time that you don’t belong in this world. But humans are so adept at denying the magick that exists around them that they’ve infected your mind too.”

I was shaking my head, but in my heart something about what she was saying was ringing with truth.

She nodded. “Yes, Hook, your life is in your head. Trapped in there, and has been for many decades. I’m sorry it took my friends and I so long to find you. It’s a travesty that you wound up in this cold, sterile world. But we’re here now, it’s okay to remember. It’s okay to believe again. You know you want to.”

I swallowed hard. My hands were visibly shaking now. Memories began to spiral through me, long forgotten ones that I’d repressed after the countless beatings I’d received from my sperm donor. I’d never felt connected to that man, or the woman who’d called me her son. I’d never felt like either of them truly belonged to me. I might have come from her womb and his seed but they’d not actually been mine or me theirs.

Lost in those memories I heard myself speak, but the sound was small, faraway.

“Once I saw myself fighting a sea monster, blade in hand, rains whipping at my face. Men stood behind me with their swords drawn. I’d been powerful, a king of the seas. And beside me, I’d seen a woman with a shimmering mane of golden blond hair. She’d been mine and I’d been hers. I’ve seen her all my life. But not just her. I saw a female with green hair and a mint colored tail who’d also been mine. So many times, I tried to tell my family of her, tell them that I needed to find her.” I blinked, snapped back to the present as the haunting echoes of flesh striking flesh rang in my ears. “But my folks beat that nonsense out of me, I was wrong. That life had never been real.”

Aphrodite was shaking her head. “No, you were right. And those bastards deserve to have their hands broken for laying a hand upon a child that way. It’s the curse, Hook, don’t you see.”

I laughed. “Hook. Pirate. I see why he called me that.” I held up my hands. Perfectly whole and fleshy hands. “There’s just one problem. I couldn’t possibly be this fairy tale character. I have two hands.”

She sniffed. “The curse has affected us all differently.”

“Curse. Curse. Curse!” I snarled. “There was no damn curse and I’m not falling for this. I’m not crazy.
